I wouldn’t be caught dead freelance copywriting

I’ve fallen in love with email copywriting.

Wanna know the crazy part?

The whole reason I started was because I got obsessed with copywriting a few months back, so I started emailing my own list and created my own product as practice—with the goal in the back of my own mind to eventually take on my own clients.

But I became my own first client.

Now, I wouldn’t be caught dead offering email copywriting as a service.

Why?

Firstly, as I’ve learned through my own list, email is only one component of a business, and I’m too much of a control freak to run a business’s email without having input on the other components —components which DIRECTLY impact the effectiveness of email as a sales tool.

What do I mean?

Let’s unpack any successful solo business (I mean real businesses, not dancing monkeys who managed to build an audience and now put entrepreneur in their social media bios).

There’s an ART to it. It goes like this:

A) is for Attention

R) is for Retention

T) is for Transaction

Attention: audience building activities such as social media posts, podcasts, collaboration etc.

Retention: build a relationship with audience by moving their attention to your email list—and retaining that relationship by showing up daily. I call this the “here for you” business plan.

Transaction: straightforward but not really. You need something to sell (an offer). If the first two parts of this equation are done well and you mess this up, you won’t have the sale. You need to offer something people want. Something people need. Something that solves a fear, frustration or aspiration.

Email copywriting focuses on the R(etention) in the ART. But you need the A and T in place for it to work.

Not enough (quality) Attention, and the list size and churn alone leads to lacklustre sales.

No offer the list wants? Then the best emails in the world can’t lead to the Transaction.

So, I vow to never offer my services to any business without also providing input (either helping to develop, or performing an audit) on their attention and transaction strategy.

The A.R.T of solo business is a framework from the upcoming Intentional Creator Blueprint.
